A Multi-Method Observation System

The CSAS is a multi-method classroom observational system for measuring, developing, and supporting evidence-based instructional and classroom behavioral management practices in classrooms. As a collaborative formative assessment approach, the CSAS enhances professional development conversations between instructional leaders and their teachers by asking the following questions:

  1. What evidence-based practices are teachers using in their classrooms?

  2. Are these classroom practices effective?

  3. If yes, how can we support their continued use?

  4. If no, what classroom practice changes can teachers make to enhance their effectiveness?

  5. How can we support this change process and help teachers sustain practice improvements?

By orienting educators to these questions, the CSAS promotes a shared understanding and dialogue about the elements of effective teaching  that leads to a collaborative process for identifying practice goals and enhancing teachers' classroom practices.

CSAS Process

Step 1:

Pre-Observation

Conference

Through a series of guided prompts, the CSAS focuses pre-observation meetings on relevant learning objectives, instructional processes, and the unique context of each classroom.

An Online Platform for Scoring, Reporting, and
Generating Powerful Teacher Feedback

The CSAS was designed as a collaborative, formative assessment of teachers’ use of empirically-supported instruction and classroom management strategies. As a collaborative approach, the CSAS intends to enhance professional development conversations between administrators, instructional coaches and teachers by asking the following five questions

By orienting administrators and teachers to these questions, the CSAS promotes a shared understanding and dialogue about the elements of effective teaching, ultimately enabling a collaborative process for identifying practice goals and enhancing classroom practices.

What Educators Are Saying
"This is a fabulous instrument and I've spent countless hours using it to get the absolute most out of our teachers. It is so incredibly targeted in its approach that I have noticed remarkable improvement in my teachers through attention to very specific items."
